Daily Express, Phase 2

Corporate WAN Replacement. Case study - December 2014

Founded in 1974, Northern and Shell Media Group has become a major force in British and worldwide news outlets, with a UK audience of more than 1.7 million. Titles include The Daily Express, Daily Star and celebrity magazines OK! New! and Star. The company operates in all major areas of publishing, with diverse interests in new media, print, distribution, investment and property. Following the successful deployment at Westferry Printworks, SynergyPlus were invited to tender for upgrading and replacing their existing MPLS Corporate WAN plus the head office’s Internet connections. Having already deployed Gigabit connections at several of Northern and Shell’s sites, SynergyPlus continued the expansion roadmap with their chosen data connectivity partner – Exponential-e.

The challenge

  1. Increase network bandwidth and speeds
  2. Improve management processes and allow portal-based changes to be made
  3. Reduce costs
  4. Provide a roadmap for SIP traffic
  5. Dovetail the roll-out with the end of their existing MPLS contractual agreements

The Synergy solution

A period of consultancy began in mid-2012 with contracts signed the summer of 2014 for all existing services and the new Wide Area Network requirement, with the last of the new circuits delivered by the end of April 2014. Existing sites were aligned with the new VPLS network allowing the client to make best use of the investment previously made in internet, and point-to-point, connections already deployed.

SynergyPlus delivered a highly resilient, secure, gigabit WAN which was deployed across all of Northern and Shell’s UK sites and their Luxembourg offices. Group Head of Technology, Simon Cohen, said: “This was quite a daunting project at the start as our networks and routing had evolved over a number years. The easy option would have been to leave things alone, but with the confidence gained from our Westferry project and a buy-in from whole IT team, N&S have not only gained the extra bandwidth with a reduced cost, but also have had added value in that the whole topology of our network has been simplified and is now properly documented; and it was all achieved with minimal downtime to our staff and service partners.”
